Dense nose of forest berries with notes of dry forest floor and wet earth. A powerfully structured wine for Beaune with some of the austerity of this site at the front of the expansive palate, but the exuberant fruit and subtle "sweetness" enables it to balance the substantial plush tannins. Long, moderately dry finish with good, stony minerality and a hint of cocoa powder. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

The 2020 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru is more backward on the nose compared to Chanson’s other Premier Crus, gradually unfurling with raspberry and blackcurrant scents, tobacco and pencil box aromas following suit. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced entry, white pepper and clove, quite cohesive with quite a persistent, slightly austere finish. This will require three or four years in bottle. Closure: Diam

This is also quite ripe yet possesses notably better freshness with less obvious wood influence on the aromas of black raspberry, violet and warm earth. There is better energy and delineation to the mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that exhibit focused power on the suave and lingering if slightly warm finale.

Though lean and angular, this white delivers moderate intensity and length, with lemon, apple vanilla and clove as the main flavor themes. Drink now.
