Located on the highly-regarded Howell Mountain in Napa Valley, Outpost is at approximately 2200ft above sea level. They produce wines made from grape varieties such as Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah and Grenache which all come from their 28 acre estate. The hard, rocky red soil combined with gentle cooling breezes and sunny western exposure creates distinctive spice notes in the bottles. With the assistance of esteemed winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, Outpost has been operating since 1998 with a change in ownership in 2003 to husband and wife duo, Kathy and Frank Dotzler. The name comes from their somewhat remote location, an ‘outpost’ since they tend to primarily host serious wine enthusiasts. Outpost has limited distribution with wine selectively going to premium restaurants in Northern California, and most of their business is word of mouth.

The opaque purple-black colored 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard comes from the nine-acre True vineyard up on Howell Mountain. A little swirling of the glass sets the nose soaring with notions of crème de cassis, blackberry pie and stewed plums, giving way to nuances of Chinese five spice, crushed rocks and iron ore with a touch of lavender. The full-bodied palate is super rich and concentrated, delivering decadent black fruit preserves and spicy layers, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. Wow—that's a lot of wine! For hedonists only... (Tasted as a barrel sample.)

Lastly, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard is pure magic. Loaded with ripe blackcurrants, tobacco, damp earth, and bouquet garni-like nuances, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, opulent mouthfeel, perfect balance, building tannins, and an awesome finish. Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon doesn't get any better. It unquestionably offers pleasure today yet is going to shine for over two decades.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard is one of the very best wines I have tasted from Outpost. Silky, creamy and deep, the 2019 possesses magnificent depth and tons of personality. Inky dark fruit, blood orange, spice, licorice and sweet oak build in the glass, buttressed by quite a bit of freshness and energy that add verve. In a word: superb.

Dark and winey, with waves and waves of steeped plum, warmed fig and boysenberry reduction flavors rolling through. Offers licorice snap, violet and apple wood notes that add range through the finish, which has a plush hint but is still driven by a strong tarry underpinning. Best from 2023 through 2036. 449 cases made.
