Brand Kinsman Eades

Nigel Kinsman is the very talented young winemaker behind the Araujo's new Accendo project and the recently autonomous Bella Oaks estate. In 2016, he and his wife Shae started their own label, based on fruit from the old Reverie vineyard on Diamond Mountain (just across from Diamond Creek's vineyards) and Sleeping Lady vineyard. This year, they managed to add an absolute treasure of a vineyard find to their lineup: Geeslin vineyard, next to Eisele vineyard in Calistoga. After a bumpy start necessitating a name change from Kinsman to Kinsman Eades and the challenges of the 2017 vintage, this 2018 trio of wines really shows the sky's-the-limit potential here. Wow.

A new addition to the Kinsman Eades lineup, the fruit for this wine comes from Geeslin vineyard, which is based in Calistoga, off Pickett Road and next to Eisele vineyard. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon La Voleuse du Chagrin is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with vibrant notions of red and black currants, black cherries and wild blueberries plus hints of candied violets, dark chocolate, Sichuan pepper and forest floor. The full-bodied palate has fantastic concentration and depth, supported by a taut structure of wonderfully ripe, velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. Seductively opulent and beautifully poised, this is one of the most exciting new single-vineyard expressions out of Napa Valley in recent years and well worth seeking out! 203 cases were made. Drink Date: 2024-2054.

A new wine in this range, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon La Voleuse du Chagrin emerges from a tiny parcel in Calistoga that was once considered part of Eisele Vineyard and that went into that wine for many years. The 2018 is a powerful, explosive wine that announces its presence with sweeping, dramatic grandeur. Layers of dark fruit, smoke, chocolate, espresso, menthol and graphite fill out the layers effortlessly. The tannins feel huge, even though the Voleuse has the lowest tannins of the three 2018s in this lineup. No matter, the 2018 is a deeply moving wine of statuesque beauty. Don't miss it.
