#6 Wine of the Year WS Top 100 2021

Corton-Charlemagne 2018 is a powerful, complex wine. Its nose is intense, with notes of white stone fruits such as white peach, fresh hazelnut, vanilla, almond paste and roasting. The wine is full-bodied for the palate, and the vanilla is complemented by aromas of fresh almond and lime blossom. The experience ends with a very fine aromatic aftertaste that has subtle saline notes. Pair with shellfish, lobster, foie gras, fish, mature cheeses.

Open and aromatic with honeysuckle flowers, dried apples and mangoes, as well as white peaches and stone. Full-bodied, this grows slowly on the palate with an intense, powerful finish. Lots of cream, cooked apples, lemons and light oak at the very end. Tight and right. Try after 2023

This wine delivers the richness and grace of this famed hillside. Cultivated from 30+-year-old vines, it offers notes of ripe citrus, fresh apple skin, orange blossom and almond. There's also a beautiful overlay of white lilies and baby's breath, framed by warm baking spices. Cellar through 2030 and beyond.

A broad and lush white, with flavors of peach, lemon oil, sweet corn and spiced apple married to a texture verging on oily. Lively, with acidity keeping this well-defined and long on the finish. Best from 2024 through 2033.

The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is also quite promising, exhibiting aromas of pear, buttered citrus fruit, honeycomb, toasted almonds and white flowers. Full-bodied, satiny and rich, with a fleshy core of fruit and good underlying freshness, I hope it can repeat this fine performance from bottle.
