This has dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote notes that are rich and deep, but not bombastic, harnessed by violet, warm earth and singed alder notes that run from start to finish. Warm humus notes pervade on the finish, echoing nicely while working in tandem with the fruit. A Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend. Best from 2022 through 2036.

The 2017 The Maiden is a deep, super-expressive wine. I am quite surprised by how rich the 2017 is, given a year in which many wines are on the lighter side. Dark red cherry and red plum fruit is front and center. There is some nervousness in the tannin so, even though The Maiden is the second wine of Harlan Estate, it needs at least a few years in bottle. This is a terrific showing.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 The Maiden opens with beautiful red currant jelly, warm plums and blackberry pie notes plus hints of rose oil, Chinese five spice and fragrant earth. The palate is medium-bodied, elegantly styled, refreshing and plush, offering bags of perfumed black fruits, finishing long and fragrant.

Bottled in February, the 2017 Maiden is a top notch 2017 that's going to evolve gracefully for two decades or more. Lots of assorted currant and berry fruits as well as notes of charcoal, graphite, and spice emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, with an elegant texture, present tannins, and a great finish. It's a beautiful wine.
