The seeds for Alcance were planted back in the early 1990s in Chile’s then unknown Maule region. While most of the country’s wineries were congregated in the warmer areas to the north, Jess Jackson and winemaster Randy Ullom believed this remote, cool-climate region located 155 miles south of Santiago was capable of producing wines of great depth, balance, character and complexity. Time has proven them prescient. Alcance is built around two estate vineyards comprised of 200 acres planted across dozens of soil types in two different climatic regions. The El Maiten Vineyard is a benchland site at the base of the Andes Mountains. Its climate is arid and mild and its wines are broad shouldered with strong aromatics and round tannins. The San Francisco Vineyard is southwest of Maule. The most striking feature of this site is its soil - the ground is thick with quartz crystals. San Francisco’s wines are tightly wound and precise with high-toned aromatics and firm flavors. All of the fruit for Alcance comes from mature blocks farmed for low yields. After hand sorting, the fruit is fermented in small lots to preserve the essence of the terroir and provide more options when creating final blends. Under the supervision of Chilean Winemaker Andres Sanchez and American Winemaster Randy Ullom, Alcance produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere, Vigno (old-vine Carignan) and Bravura, the winery’s flagship Bordeaux blend.

Bold berry and spice aromas are straight from the Carmenère textbook. In the mouth, this wine is full and beefy, with proper balance. Earthy, lightly baked and candied black-fruit flavors are graced by oak, chocolate and herbal notes on a ripe finish.
